Heart Shirt Tutorial

Time to start off February with a sweet heart top. Alright so I came up with an idea that could have been done already, but here we go. I was inspired by Ingrid's heart tights. So I used my heart hole punch and some white fabric paint to create a cute styled top, without having to purchase the oh so cute ones I have seen like here. Which is what I sort of used as a guide for this one I a made. I just used an old slong sleeve shirt that I sometimes used as a pajama top (excuse the armpit hole in following pictures, I really need to sew that!)

Here are the materials I used. I had everything except fabric paint (and the store only had dimensial fabric paint so I used it like it was normal fabric paint.

Step 1 Cut your 3x5 notecards in half like so.

Step 2 Use heart punch to punch one heart in the card (try and make in even on both sides, like it is centered).

Step 3 Put a piece of cardboard in between the shirt sides. Now place all of the cards how you want them on your shirt (I did sort of a staggered brick pattern).

Step 4 Using the fabric paint and a small brush, paint the heart carefully (painting in toward the center not away).

Step 5 Remove the card after each heart is painted.

Step 6 If you need to, carefully free-hand to give the hearts a second coating.
(wait 4 hours for paint to dry and 72 hours before washing)

I love the way it turned out and it cost me next to nothing. It is simple and just cute. It could be done with any colors and with any shape really. I think I wanna try a circle shape and make a polka-dot shirt. Thanks for reading!

  2. Ahhh! I love this! I see cute shirts like this at the store, but they are often sold out of every size but XXS by the time I get to them. This is simple and oh so cute. It's going on my to-do list. Pronto.

  5. Is it good to go through the wash? Maybe inside out and on gentle cycle?

    1. Yes, it is good to go through the wash. I just put the shirt(inside out) with a load of laundry. I used cold water. And then I turned it right side out to dry flat. It looked the complete same after I washed it. Also the paint did not crack or anything like that.

    1. I got it for $3-4 at a craft store called Pat Catans. Sadly it does not have that many locations. The best I could find it online are through these two places:
